Utsukushiki Wana Eps 1-5

Tanaka Rena plays the mistress of her boss in Utsukushiki Wana who is old enough to be her dad. I can't remember the last time I saw a good Tanaka Rena show. Maybe Ganbatte Ikkimashoi? Anyway, wifey knows about Tanaka Rena and so she sets Tanaka Rena up with her lover who has a thing for older women in a 'I know what's going on and I want you to stop' act without actually saying she knows.

Husband of course gets the hint and pulls out and Tanaka Rena responds to wifey's challenge by going along with the set up instead of choosing to back away. Lover boy who can't get the wife to leave the boss decides to play along and we have a good girl mistress vs scheming wife story.

Bframe recommended Utsukushiki Wana to me with saying that the show is so bad it might be good and it is pretty bad in the afternoon soap opera kind of way. While Hirugao was a tacky drama that tried to be something serious, Utsukushiki Wana revels in its tackiness. The acting is unbashfully bad that its kind of fun, at least for the first two episodes.

The problem is that the main character Tanaka Rena is playing is too nice. I want more backstabbing and manipulation but that character never really dips her toes into that area. First two episodes were interesting but I ended up skimming 3 to 5 waiting for her to do something. Watchable if you like Tanaka Rena and/or you want something soapie. For me the heroine is too nice which is standard for these type of shows and none of the characters are that interesting.

hmm sounds like this is a pass. if i wanted to watch soap operas, id go the kdrama daily drama route and watch those 100+ episode series.

on that note, ive been bored with jdrama this season. nothing really good standing out, just average, so i have found myself watching maids and shine or go crazy (2 historical primetime kdramas), while also marathoning a couple of 100+ episode daily kdramas. if i wanted makjang and revenge stories, the daily dramas are the way to go.

just curious, you dont like watching some kdramas mike?

Ha, thanks for the trash rec, Mike-san.
Speaking of trash, I've watched the first two eps of Second Love, and it is un-be-lievably bad. Worst acting I have ever seen in a dorama from the entire cast. Worst script. Worst everything. Kame is the most godawful "dancer" I have witnessed onscreen. Not only is this show a lock for worst trash of 2015, it may well claim the title of worst of the decade, it's that bad.
Funnily enough, this has been a season of real quality for me otherwise. The Orient Express special, Dakara Kouya (brilliant), Kaiki Renai Sakusen (someone please sub this), even the flawed Mondai Aru no Resutoran are making me very happy.

Tanaka Rena is actually in currently airing mini-drama (8 eps, 30min each) called Toho Nanafun 徒步7分. It's an amazing quiet gem in which she's the most socially awkward, depressed otaku. It's incredibly introspective, heartbreaking but also oddly life-affirming. You should check it out if you havent!

Slightly off topic. Kageri Yuku Natsu had a pretty cool first episode. A bit slow, but very stylish. It oozes wowow quality : )

dgundam: I stay very, very far away from kdramas.

Rootabega: Now you got me curious to see how bad of a train wreck it is.

emsterz: Thanks for recommendation for Toho Nanafun.

Antspace: Waiting for ep 2 subs before I write about it.

I haven't found a good dorama 10 by NHK. Most of them are stories about heroines going through trials and tribulations but they're always too safe and uninteresting. Even asadora is more lively. Dorama10 may be the worst dramas by NHK standard.
